Why avatars are blue

At Virtual Visitor, we pride ourselves in creating bespoke environments for our clients, each one being totally unique from another. Avatars play a fundamental role in bringing our environments to life. When creating this virtual reality, we found it to be important to make it as realistic and bespoke as possible. Yes, we can! While not adding to intelligence, it enables them to share a deep connection and also communicate telepathically with the Tree of Souls and any animals who have a similar nerve cluster.

The Na'vi call it tsaheylu , or "the bond". When two Pandoran organisms with nerve clusters similar to this engage in tsaheylu, they gain the ability to share memories and information. This trait is only negated during mating see below. When the humans began to search Pandora for valuable minerals, the Na'vi were appalled and angered by the destruction of their jungle home for roads, human bases and strip mines.

They saw no need for technology and felt that the damage done by humans in the pursuit of underground minerals was nothing more than senseless destruction that violated the basic tenets of their religion.

They would look to Eywa for help, but their religion teaches that Eywa cares not for the existence of any one creature, she cares only for the balance of nature. The two opposing ideologies and cultures resulted in thoughts on both sides that the other was inferior: the Na'vi believing that humans were ignorant aliens who only destroy, and the humans thinking that the primitive Na'vi were nothing but simple savages.

These fundamental misunderstandings were, in part, responsible for the conflict between the two races. Diplomatic ties between the humans and Na'vi were established for several years with the opening of Grace Augustine 's schoolhouse , where Na'vi children could interact with human culture and learn the English language.

Avatar bodies were also employed as diplomatic devices to help build trust in the Na'vi. However, the schoolhouse would ultimately be closed following a shooting by the RDA that resulted in the deaths of several Na'vi in attendance. Jake Sully and Neytiri mating under the Tree of Voices. The Na'vi are monogamous creatures who mate for life.

The mechanics of reproduction are similar to that of humans and other Terran mammals. However, their unique physiology provides the Na'vi with a level of intimacy unknown on Earth. Cultural anthropologists believe that when an appropriate mate has been selected which can take many years , the pair will connect queues called tsaheylu to create an emotional bond that lasts a lifetime.

The intertwining of queues is both highly erotic and profoundly spiritual, but does not in itself lead to reproduction. A single instance of this bonding ritual leads to a life-long pair bond. Traditionally, once a young Na'vi has passed the tests on the path to adulthood and has been accepted into the clan as an adult, they are allowed to make a bow from the wood of the Hometree and choose a mate.

After the mate has been chosen, the new couple mates before Eywa. Though male Na'vi typically bond with female Na'vi, same-sex couples are not uncommon. She accepted and mated with him under the Tree of Voices. The Na'vi have no far-reaching political structure on the scale of nation-states, but are organized into relatively complex clans, of which there are hundreds [18]. Occasionally, different clans from distant areas will cooperate in times of a great crisis.

The only known event that has caused all clans to join together is when they are led by a Toruk Makto , a Na'vi who has managed to ride and control a great leonopteryx and, in doing so, unite all clans under them.

By the events of Avatar in , this has only occurred five times in their history and the last Toruk Makto lived four ancestral generations ago. Pandora is largely a jungle world and, thus, many Na'vi tribes are similar to the Omaticaya clan that lives near the RDA mining operations at Hell's Gate. It is vaguely implied that clans from other biomes may display some regional variation in culture. At the very least the clans must undergo some form of trade, as exemplified by the Omaticaya's usage of items that originate with other clans, such as Tawkami rider masks and Kekunan banshee catchers.

When Jake Sully, as the sixth Toruk Makto, rallied "all the clans" to aid the Omaticaya in driving off the RDA and protecting the Tree of Souls, fourteen clans were said to answer the call. Toruk Makto has the ability to unite the clans in times of great sorrow. Including Jake, only six Na'vi have become Toruk Makto in history, but it is unknown how many reunions there have been. There also appear to have been Toruk Makto outside of this count, such as Able Ryder [27] , although it is worth noting that he did not bond his mount.

Unless otherwise noted, information is taken from the motion picture Avatar. Where details conflict between the film and printed material, the film is deemed accurate. Respiration, musculo-skeletal structure, internal organ function and arrangement are comparable to those of the Na'vi, enabling sustained precision operation in the hostile Pandoran atmosphere and jungle environment.

The avatar also possesses reproductive organs but further data has not been released. The avatar body possesses greater strength and resilience than the body of its human driver, owing this to the carbon fibers reinforcing its bones. This quality greatly improves resistance to accidental damage, such as impacts from falls and other mishaps, especially as a new operator is getting used to driving his or her avatar.

An avatar cannot function independently of its operator - if the operator is not actively linked, an avatar remains inactive in a state of restful sleep.

Its autonomic body functions breathing, digestion, metabolism and other stem-brain processes operate normally. The avatars sleep in a longhouse near Hell's Gate. It is possible, using the unique biology of Pandora and the assistance of the Na'vi, for a human to transfer his or her conscious mind permanently into an avatar body. The process was also used by the Omaticaya in , in an attempt to save the life of the Avatar Program's lead scientist, Grace Augustine. However, the transfer failed due to her earlier injuries.

The movie concluded with his human body being exposed to the moon's atmosphere and his avatar body opening its eyes. The original script , while no longer canon, did deal with the death of a linked Avatar. The script featured a character named Hegner who lost his Avatar to a Slinth. Added to the trauma is the loss No real consequences are shown of this loss, although there did appear to be some doubt over whether his human body would survive. During the events of the film, Norm 's Avatar is seemingly injured in combat, causing Norm to jerk awake in his link chamber.

While not explicitly shown how his Avatar is treated for its wounds, we know it survived as he is seen later in his Avatar form as they and chosen Na'vi escort the now exiled RDA onto their shuttle to be sent back to Earth. Avatars are partially based on the genetic makeup of their human "driver", so one human cannot use another's avatar.

The Avatar Program had produced 20 bodies as of The following lists all known Avatars, with their active period denoted. Grace Augustine had the longest lived Avatar of any currently known, at 15 years. Avatar Wiki Explore. Explore Wikis Community Central.
