Make sure that you have purchased all the required books for your second year at Hogwarts. Refer to your Shopping List for help. Get the books that are still not crossed out. You will find potion ingredients just by exploring the scenes in Pottermore.

You get a house point too if it is your first time discovering the ingredient. Please make the effort to find them yourself! Note: You need to be logged into Pottermore for these links to work. After using or giving it away , one of them will not reappear on the scenes. For a full list of prices and exact locations of free ingredients, refer to this very useful post on tumblr. Yes, but the game it set in a way that you will definitely need to buy an ingredient from the Apothecary at Diagon Alley.

Refer to the link above and spend your Galleons wisely. Cauldrons differ in the amount of time needed to heat up and brew. This means your cauldron choice will affect how difficult it is to keep the temperature within a certain range.

A copper cauldron may be quick to warm up but it also means that temperature will be harder to control. Whether if it is the simple Pewter, Copper or Brass, it will all take the same waiting time to brew until Pottermore makes the necessary changes.

In a recent update however, brewing time is affected by cauldron type. See next section for details. You can leave your cauldron for a maximum of twice the time it takes to brew a potion. Once a potion is ready to move onto the second phase, a second timer that is as long as time to brew will start counting down. For example, if Cure for Boils takes 40 minutes to brew, you can return after 40 minutes, but not after 80 minutes.

You will fail to brew your potion correctly, but you will not lose or gain any points. You get to keep your cauldron too. Use a mobile phone, or something with that function. Do people still use kitchen timers? Results are the same for all potions, whether if it is a Sleeping Draught or Cure for Boils. However, points awarded for potions are now different. See next section. Recently, the scoring system has changed and successful attempts no longer always award 5 House Points. Pay attention to the animation of your ingredients falling into your cauldron.

Whenever you add something, it takes a moment for it to fall into your cauldron — Yes I know, common sense tells you that they should just plop right in, not disintegrate into tiny pieces and descend gently. Best to keep track of the little counter next to your cauldron before moving on to the next step. You can also check your potion book and ensure that it has been crossed out.

Also note that some ingredients are handled in multiple quantities — For example, you will always take 3x snake fangs. Hence, if a recipe requires 6 snake fangs, you should only take it twice 3 fangs, 2 servings. You have three buttons. Pay attention to the thermometer next to your cauldron, especially the marked out zones. You cannot allow the heat level to go beyond this zone.

For some challenging potions, you will need to alternate between the Blue and Orange buttons to keep the level stable within the small safe zone. You will not lose your ingredients and will simply start off in the first stage.

I can no longer suggest doing this — it has been patched recently and using the back button will deplete ingredients in your inventory.

I have lost quite a few brews because of some technical issues, probably because my Pottermore login cookie expired BUT the Potions game does not know and still allows me to continue. Universal Conquest Wiki. Swelling Solution. Antidote to Common Poisons.

Doxycide Shrinking Solution. Wideye or Awakening Potion. Herbicide Sleeping Draught. Polyjuice Potion Shrinking Solution. I love the amount of details you go into…you write so beautifully.

Can you add the option to your blog where we subscribe via e-mail? That way, whenever you put up a new post it notifies us in our emails?? Wish I read it before buying the 25g gallions. Hi Dejiki, thanks for collating all the information on Potions! Some of these are really useful.

I got very frustrated when the ingredients kept falling into the cauldron as I passed them over to the mortar! Glad the tips were helpful! I think they have changed the points system. I just brewed a Forgetfulness Potion successfully, and it awarded me 9 house points.

A revisit on the house points at least might be in order. Thanks for the heads up, I have made a new section about points in this entry. How can I brew potions again? This is one of the infamous potions glitch. It says. What happens when you click the message? Does it bring you to the Potions game screen?

It brings me back to Cauldrons page, but nothing changes. If you are stuck in Phase 1, I suggest that you make a minor mistake with your brew and get 1 house point for effort so that the game would purge that potion session out of the game. It happened to me too today I tried to brew Wideye, waited for 95 minutes and when I get back, it showed me the steps of Phase 1!!!

So frustrating! I just wasted many precious galleons!!! I have a question with regards to waiting for the potions to brew till the second page. Does that mean I have to have that window open for 80 minutes? You do not have to. The active cauldron will be shown and there is even a progress bar to inform you about its status. Sorry another question. What happens if you put down bottles sideways when you finish using them… wherein they keep spilling on the table?

I used to have the problem with it not taking me to the second phase. I have a slow computer. On slow computers, heating up your material actually behaves differently than on a fast one. With a pewter cauldron, I need to alternate on the red and orange buttons to keep the temperature in range, instead of alternating on the orange and blue. The temperature only goes up on red, and drops semi-briskly on orange.

You do keep the ingredients but you have to wait for the potion to brew again. In that case, I would never recommend a Copper cauldron to users with slow computers. Thanks for pointing that out. You can click on this link too. Awesome stuff! When I was making the Wideye Potion, I spilled some dried billywig stings when I laid it back down on the table.

The cauldron exploded after I waved my wand. Did the spill affect my brewing? The game does leave a message stating what went wrong — do you still remember what it said?

Hi Dejiki, Thank you very much for this blog. When I click on the button below the cauldron, the site brings me back to making the same potion, as if nothing happened. The second time I followed your instructions and let it brew on a separate window, too. It did remove ingredients from my account, though, for both potions. Unfortunately this is not a problem with your browser, but with the Pottermore server. I would suggest waiting for Pottermore to go into maintenance mode — usually that would clear and reset all Potion sessions in most situations.

Hi Dejiki, Thank you for your very fast :-! More patience, and more frowning when I try again, and again, and again..

I tested this out on purpose. Odd things happen: pestle stops working, cannot grab ingredients, etc. Add me! I have been making the forgetfulness potion, but when I went back to it after letting it brew it came up with the support message- will this effect my potion in any way?

The other says that Pottermore is unavailable due to maintenance. If you see the first message, your potion will not be affected but do note that the brew-time countdiown is still running! It means that you have to wait for your potion to brew — while waiting you can explore other parts of Pottermore or just anything else. Just take note of the time and come back when the time is up. I always seem to mess up when i wave my wand.

Make sure you click on the wand only when all the instructions in the Potions book have been crosssed out. The problem is, I am. How do I keep the temperature within the right range while my wand is waving?? But, it seems the Wideye needs to be kept that temperature the whole time. I just tried to brew it and even with the temperature within the right range AFTER the wand-waving by turning off the fire when the temperature is at the highest acceptable point, then quickly on the wand , it still fails.

But I get a message saying that I did not maintain the temperature properly this happened with the Wideye Potion. There is a bug with the Wideye Potion, making it impossible to be brewed at this stage.

Thank you SO much for posting this. Without it, I would not have ever found Bat Spleens. I was wondering if you could do a similar page for books. Safari, firefox and Chrome??? What about IE9 and Opera? Mac user? How do I move on to making new potions? Thanks, Hannah. You will require this potion to enter the Slytherin common room in Book 2, Chapter I would like to ask how many potions can we keep? Okay so as you seem to be an expert, have you experienced the issue where the potion freezes mid brew? It has been like this for four or so days now.

Any suggestions?? Just make sure to return to your potion before the time limit. Actually, given your new details here, the best potion to brew in relation to points over time is the Antidote to Common Poisons potion. In this time you could brew 30 Sleeping Draughts for points or 53 Antidote to Common Poisons for points.
